Welcome to Springorchid Files!
My name is Phoebe Lim. I live in sunny hot Singapore and work as an academic librarian. Springorchid Files is my personal site where I curate content interesting or meaningful to me. It is my filing cabinet in the Cloud.
I’ve been curating my digital archives since 2006. Can’t believe I started before the iPhone came into existence. The Internet is a different place back then. Initially, I maintained two separate sites, they are merged now at Springorchid Files.
As I reflect on my collection, I realize that my interests are not as haphazard as I once believed. Certain themes consistently draw me in, weaving a rich tapestry of content.
Mysteries and Intrigues
I like reading detective fiction, mystery novels, and fantasy novels. I can do romance occasionally and I like clever and wise protagonists. Adaptations hold a special place: a delicate dance between words and visuals. I am drawn to adaptations to books I have not read. If the adaptation is good, I will go read the book. I guess you can say that they serve as reviews.
I am also a sucker for crime dramas. I have a soft spot for British crime dramas. The best are the clever and witty ones. Some of the Chinese and American ones are also good.
Knitting
I like homecrafts, making practical things with my hands. I tried many and knitting stuck. I compile knitting patterns, designed some (PDFs available).
Culinary Adventures
My culinary adventures started with Chinese soups. Once, I ran a website called “Magic of Homemade Chinese Soups,” From nourishing broths to aromatic concoctions, I’ve amassed a stack of recipes and they reside here now.
Nostalgia Unearthed
I have always had an old soul. I like watching old movies, period dramas, reading historical fiction, and archaeology. I also archive songs that resonate with my spirit and videos that evoke laughter or tears.
Life Stories Through Lens and Words
I used to keep a journal about my days. A lot of them are ramblings and I save my life transforming encounters with my Jesus in the Bible. I also journal about my journey towards financial wellbeing. You only learn when you reflect on your mistakes and successes.
I would also like to be able to start capturing life moments with families, friends, places and work. I’m not a famous person with big stories. Little stories of a common woman have their place too.

What does Springorchid mean?
Springorchid is made up of 2 words: Spring and Orchid. It is a straightforward translation of my Chinese name: 春兰.
Growing up, I was told that the meaning of my name is just some flowers in the springtime. A teacher once told me that it is a common practice for the uneducated to name children after natural objects and seasons. It is true that many domestic helpers in feudal China bear similar names.
Much later, I found out that 春兰 is the Chinese name of an orchid species known as Cymbidium goeringii. Confucius called it the Noble orchid.
It is a small plant, with small fragrant flowers. It grows on the ground in temperate regions like Japan, China and the Korean peninsula.
I don’t think my father knew about this association when he gave me my name. But it is nice to share my name with a beautiful fragrant orchid.
I thought it would be nice to use this to name my personal site. It also gave me an opportunity to mention the noble orchid.
Thank you for visiting. May the content I share resonate with your interests and prove useful. Happy browsing!
