The Adventure of the Speckled Band was originally published in the Strand Magazine in 1892. It was later collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes [affiliate link]. It has some gothic elements and was considered by many including the author himself as one of his finest works.
Synopsis
A young woman suspects her stepfather may be trying to kill her in order to take over her inheritance. Her older sister had already died under mysterious circumstances.
This is a classic locked-room mystery. A murder has occurred, there is a suspect but the question is how was the murder committed? What is the speckled band? Why was it used in the title?
