The Adventure of the Speckled Band was originally published in Strand Magazine in 1892. It was later collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (affiliate link). It has some gothic elements and was considered by many including the author himself as one of his finest works.
Synopsis
A young woman suspects her stepfather may be trying to kill her in order to take over her inheritance. Her older sister had already died under mysterious circumstances.
This is a classic locked-room mystery. A murder has occurred, there is a suspect but the question is how was the murder committed? What is the speckled band? Why was it used in the title?
