I didn’t really know who Don Moen is, or where he is from when I first heard his worship songs. I only knew his songs helped me worship and pray ever since I was a young Christian. Years later, I read his 2018 memoir. It makes some of his songs even more meaningful for me.
Compilation of 5 Don Moen Worship Songs
These 5 songs impacted me the most. Compiled with lyrics and videos.
1. God Will Make a Way
Don Moen wrote God Will Make a Way in 1987 for 2 people. His sister-in-law and her husband, who lost their eight-old son in a car accident. Over the years, it had impacted so many more people. Including me.
In his book, Don Moen wrote, “I knew they were all trapped in a rising flood of grief, pain, and the horrible what-ifs overwhelming them, as well as walking through a fire that seemed to be all-consuming.”
Having lost close family members myself, his words resonate with me. When grief hits, it does feel like a rising flood, threatening to engulf your whole person. The hope that God brings, comforts. It is by His grace that I can walk out of the grief knowing that He is near and He will work something new in my life.
The song was meant to be a song of declaration, a reminder of God’s faithfulness.
Lyrics for God Will Make a Way
God will make a way Where there seems to be no way He works in ways we cannot see He will make a way for me He will be my guide Hold me closely to His side With love and strength for each new day He will make a way, He will make a way By a roadway in the wilderness, He'll lead me Rivers in the desert will I see Heaven and earth will fade but His Word will still remain And He will do something new today
2. Here in Your Presence
Don Moen wrote Here in Your Presence when he finally heeded God’s calling on his life to be a songwriter.
When the music starts, it is so easy to let go of whatever I am carrying and float in His presence. I close my eyes and just quietly wait upon Him. His mercy washes over me. Everything else fades and fall away.
Lyrics of Here in Your Presence
Here in your presence Beholding Your glory Bowing in reverence We worship You only Chorus Standing before You, We love and adore You, O Lord There is none like You Name above all names Exalted forever Jesus Our Saviour Our lives we surrender Worthy of Glory Worthy of Honour We Give you Blessing Glory and Power
3. Somebody’s Praying For Me
Don Moen wrote Somebody’s Praying for Me as a testimony to the power of prayer. He is both a recipient of prayer as well as a prayer warrior for others.
He waited 8 years for children.
He wrote in his book, “Our faith was wavering, but we still prayed. I think I should repeat that simple but profound statement again for this spiritual truth to sink deep into your spirit: though our faith wavered, we still pray.”
This reminds me of Abraham’s wait for Isaac.
Without being weakened in faith, he didn’t consider his own body, already having been worn out, (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God, and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was also able to perform.
Romans 4: 19-21 WEB
This is how the Bible recorded Abraham’s faith in the Book of Hebrews. It said he wasn’t weakened, he didn’t waver. But if we read the Book of Genesis, we know that Abraham doubted. But even though he doubted, He never left God. Because he knew that the Lord is able.
In the same way, even though our faith goes up and down, let’s persist in praying. For ourselves and for others.
Lyrics for Somebody’s Praying for Me
I was lost in a desert land So dry and thirsty But God was there where he'd always been Giving grace and mercy So hard to sing and hard to pray Yet I knew his word was true And then one day my faith returned And suddenly I knew Chorus Somebody's praying for me Somebody's knocking on heaven's door Somebody's praying for me Somebody's lifting me up to the Lord I knew it had to be Somebody down on their knees Somebody praying for me I've been spared by so many prayers How many times I could not say What a difference a prayer can make When it's offered up in faith God has always made a way When I didn't know what to do Just when I needed a miracle That's when your prayers broke through Now I know that friend was you You were the gift God gave me 'Cause when you prayed His love broke through It was your prayer that saved me Thank you for praying for me Thank you for knocking on heaven's door Thank you for praying for me Thank you for lifting me up to the Lord Now I can clearly see That you were the one on your knees So thank you for praying for me
4. I Believe There is More
I Believe There is More was written during Don Moen’s transition from Integrity Music into his own ministry. He was doing well at Integrity and to leave, I think, is not easy. In his book, he described how God opened the way for him.
And because he walked through the open door, he said that “he got a front-row seat to watch our great God move and make a way as only He can.“
As I go through various life stages and having to make decisions about what to do next, this song encourages me that God has more in store. Where this is a pulse, there is a purpose.
Lyrics for I Believe There is More
You have been good to me You have been good to me You have been gracious You have been faithful Meeting my needs Lord, it's so plain to see You have been good to me I have been given so much I can't even Begin to thank You Chorus And still I believe there is more I believe there is more I believe So I open my hands to receive All that Your love has in store Lord, I believe Everything I have done All that I've said and sung Lifting Your story giving You glory That's just the beginning Father, I know there is more Power to heal and restore Miracles wonders blessings unnumbered Love never-ending Bridge Exceeding abundantly More than our minds can imagine Love overflowing You are bestowing Day after day after day
5. I Will Sing
Don Moen wrote this song in his car on the way back from a 5-day composing retreat. He didn’t produce a single song during those few days. Feeling upset, he complained to the Lord and this song was the result.
The complaint was his true self, his true feelings. Isn’t God wonderful? He did not take offence and instead bless Don Moen with a song. It is like Ephesians 3:12 in action.
In him we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him.
Ephesians 3:12 WEB
In the same way, I have noticed that when I come to God with my honest feelings, I am blessed. And because of His blessings, I can sing and I will sing.
Lyrics for I Will Sing
Lord, You seem so far away A million miles or more, It feels today And though I haven't lost my faith I must confess right now That it's hard for me to pray But I don't know what to say And I don't know where to start But as You give the grace With all that's in my heart Chorus I will sing, I will praise, Even in my darkest hour Through the sorrow and the pain I will sing, I will praise, Lift my hands to honor You Because Your word is true, I will sing Lord it's hard for me to see All the thoughts and plans You have for me But I will put my trust in You Knowing that you died To set me free But I don't know what to say And I don't know where to start But as you give the grace With all that's in my heart
Why Worship?
In Don Moen’s 2018 memoir, “God Will Make A Way: Discovering His Hope in Your Story” (affiliate link), he shared stories and snapshots from his life, career, and the circumstances that led him to write some of his songs.
When we trust in the Lord, there is hope.
Don Moen wrote that his purpose, “the worship of the Great I AM to usher in His power, praise, healing and deliverance“, is inspired by Psalm 40:3,
He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God.
Psalm 40:3
Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in Yahweh.
Jack Hayford wrote,
“As deserving as God is of our worship and as much as He delights in our praises, He did not design this practice for His benefit. Worship is for our sake because worship is the atmosphere that welcomes His presence and gives place to His mighty works.”
God design worship for us. When we worship God in songs, His presence is welcomed and we are blessed.
The power of a song to allow people to see, fear and trust the Lord.
Don Moen admitted that he does not have a great singing voice. He has never thought of leading worship in front of crowds. All he wanted was to create music and work in the background.
Yet, God called him to lead thousands into His presence to receive His power, healing and deliverance through song and praise.
Imagine what may happen if we also open our hearts and hands to the Lord. Where will He bring us?
The message of his book is inspired by Isaiah 43:18-19,
Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old.
Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
Isaiah 43:18-19 WEB
In the midst of anxiety, worries, depression, pain, grief, or loss, God is here. He promise to do something NEW. He will make a way in the wilderness. He will make rivers in the desert.
It is okay to have doubts, to waver, to question, to complain along the way. But remember not to lose trust in the Lord. When we trust in the Lord, there is hope.
Prayer: Thank you Abba God for Your promises.
