A Knit Hobo Bag Pattern Using Garter Stitch Squares

knit hobo bag pattern

A knitter posted her knit hobo bag pattern in Japanese on Ravelry. She only gave general instructions in English. The design does not look too difficult so I thought I should give it a go.

I am very pleased with the finished product. It looks difficult but is actually quite easy. I have a little mental block with the handles (which is why this took me 2 months) but a little help from my knitting buddies cleared the block. I lined the bag including the handles because the handle of my Japanese knot bag (previous project) had started to stretch. I was told that I should have lined the handles as well.

Since I have made the knit hobo bag successfully, I thought I might as well write out the detailed instructions in English.

This knit hobo bag pattern teaches you how to knit 22 garter stitch squares to make a fashionable hobo bag. The squares are sewn together in a particular order to form the bag’s body. Let us take a closer look.

Materials & Equipment

  • 1 ball of black acrylic yarn
  • 1 ball of white acrylic yarn
  • 1 pair of 3.5mm knitting needles or US no. 4 knitting needles. Short double-pointed knitting needles (dpi) work quite well too since the squares are quite small.

Knit 22 Garter Stitch Squares

Using 3.5mm dpi, cast on 21 stitches with black yarn. The cast on row serves as the border.

Switch to white yarn and knit 2 rows. This forms 1 white ridge.

Switch to black yarn and knit 2 rows. This forms 1 black ridge.

Continue switching colours after every 2 rows to create the ridges.

After ridge 20 or row 40 (which should be white) knit 1 row of black yarn and bind off.

Make 22 squares.

Sewing Up

Sew them up together in this combination:

5 squares together to form a long strip. Make 2.
4 squares together to form a long strip. Make 2.
2 squares together. Make 2.

Arrange the 6 strips as shown in the picture below. Seam them up to make up the body of the bag.

Once all the strips are sewn up, sew the sides together as indicated in the picture.

Fold the body in half and sew up the sides. Crochet a single row along the opening to strengthen the bag opening.

Bag Handles

Make 2.

Pick up 9 stitches at 2 corners of the bag body. Knitting the both handles at the same time ensure they are of the same length.

The handles are knitted using a single rib stitch.

Row 1 – Knit 1 Purl 1
Row 2 – Purl 1 Knit 1

Continue the single rib pattern until the handle is about 17 inches or 44 cm. Attach the 2 handles to the 2 corners on the other side of the body. I did this by picking up 9 stitches from the corners and then grafting the 2 sets of live stitches using the Kitchener grafting technique.

I highly recommend the knitting needle method by Techknitter. Instead of sewing, it is still knitting.

Line the bag and handles with the fabric of the corresponding colour. The lining hides all the ends. No weaving needed. Turn the bag right side out and you are done!

Hi Terri, No problem. Glad to be of help. I was hoping for English instructions when I first stumbled upon the pattern. Alas, it is in Japanese, so I thought I should provide the English supplement as I try to follow the pattern. Do show me the completed FO.

I really like this bag and greatly appreciate you providing English directions.  Even tho your directions are quite clear, I still have a stupid question … probably because I haven’t felted anything before … but when do you do the felting?

    1. Phoebe Avatar

Hi Peachy, not a stupid question at all. The reason you can’t find the direction is because I didn’t felt this bag. If you want to felt yours, do so before lining the bag. 🙂

Phoebe, thank you for that.  So I don’t have to felt it?  That’s good news … I may try and make this one.  Is there any particular fabric you use for the lining or should I just choose anything that I think will go with the bag?

      2. Phoebe Avatar

I used an old T-shirt so I guess you should choose anything that you think go with the bag.
