Hi! Welcome to Springorchid Files

My name is Phoebe Lim. I live in sunny hot Singapore and work as an academic librarian.

Springorchid Files is my personal site. I file random content that are of interest or are meaningful to me. It is literally my filing cabinet in the Cloud.

What do I file?

I have been filing since 2006. I used to keep 2 sites but have now combined them. Looking over my filings, I realized that they are not as random as I thought. There are some common topics. I gravitate towards detective fiction, mystery fiction, literary adaptations, old movies, Chinese cooking, personal finance, and spiritual wellbeing.

I file a lot of songs and videos that matter to me. I want to keep records of music that touches my soul and videos that make me laugh or cry.

I also file a lot of content on my favourite hobby: knitting. These include compilations of free knitting patterns, and my own knitting designs. I created an online store selling PDFs of some of my content to people who want offline access.

I’ve come to a stage in my life where I am interested in photo journalling; document the stories behind photos of families, friends, familiar places old and new, and more.

Finally, I amassed a lot of Chinese soup recipes and cooking related content on Chinese cooking when I ran a website called Magic of Homemade Chinese Soups. They can be found here too.

What does Springorchid mean?

Springorchid is made up of 2 words: Spring and Orchid. It is a straightforward translation of my Chinese name: 春兰.

Growing up, I was told that the meaning of my name is just some flowers in the springtime. A teacher once told me that it is a common practice for the uneducated to name children after natural objects and seasons. It is true that many domestic helpers in feudal China bear similar names.

Much later, I found out that 春兰 is the Chinese name of an orchid species known as Cymbidium goeringii. Confucius called it the Noble orchid.

It is a small plant, with small fragrant flowers. It grows on the ground in temperate regions like Japan, China and the Korean peninsula.

I don’t think my father knew about this association when he gave me my name. But it is nice to share my name with a beautiful fragrant orchid.

I thought it would be nice to use this to name my personal site. It also gave me an opportunity to mention the noble orchid.

Thank you for dropping by. I hope what I share are of interest and use to you.

Happy browsing!

Dear James, thank you for your offer but my filing cabinet is a personal blog not a business blog and I would like to keep it that way. Thanks for dropping by. All the best!

    Hi,

Thanks for sharing.  Love the picture of the dog, by the way.  I copied the lyrics of
one of the songs written in Singapore and the wonderful people there.

Hi Phoebe! Thanks for sharing this website. Your filing cabinet had helped me greatly in sarching for the song “Your Loving Kindness is Better than Life” in the Chinese album “Justified” by New Creation Church. A recorded music file of this song was sent to me asking if I knew what song it was. Basing on the muffled recorded two lines, I tried typing out the only two lyrics recorded and what I could make out. Then found the search result showing your filing cabinet. From the lyrics posted on your website, I continued to search for the song and found the track on another website! I should’ve prayed before beginning the search and should’ve clicked on your link before starting my search which took me a few hours (saw your blog link but ignored initially). Shortly after I prayed, I saw your blog link again and found the song within 2mins! This song is very important to me because it is for my sis’ friend who has shifted to Shanghai to work and who has just found a church to worship. She came across this song and recorded 2 lines, asking my sis to help search what song it is. Thanks again, Phoebe.

    Hi Ms. Phoebe,
I stumbled upon your website while looking for the lyrics of NCC songs. It’s my first time to find a traveling person to worry about homeless people, usually people are more concerned about their own tours, praise God for people like you. Hoping by God’s will, I be able to work in SG, I would love to go and have a ministry in NCC someday. From what I can see, there’s a big difference with people who understand God’s love for them. I find them cool 🙂 God bless!

Hi Mari, thanks for your kind words. Actually that post is written by my sister. I should go add that in as a clarification. 🙂
